Bedtime Blues

As the days have gotten longer, Mr. Sun has brought us a problem.

Generally, we would head upstairs at 7pm and take baths until 7:30pm, then brush teeth, read books, say prayers and get the girls asleep by 8pm. Then the girls would sleep until around 7ish. Cecilia no longer takes naps and Felicity generally takes 1 lasting about 1 1/2 hours in the afternoon.

But the sun. Oh the sun. It rises earlier and sets later. And one girl sleeps on the east side of the house and one girl sleeps on the west side of the house. So Cecilia has been getting up between 5:45 and 6:30 declaring that “The sun is up! Time to get up!” while Felicity tries to sleep in because she couldn’t fall asleep until well past 8pm with the sunlight streaming into her bedroom such that she can see everything and simply wants to play.

So we stay up later with one girl and get up earlier with the other. Throw a 9 month pregnant woman into the mix and you get some very tired family members. In fact, getting up so early will even make Cecilia take a nap some days.

So, what to do? We are working on putting up dark curtains in each bedroom to block out the light when little ones should be sleeping. Cecilia’s arrived yesterday and we got them up this afternoon. We will see how it goes, but here is hoping she will sleep a bit more in the morning. Hopefully the ones for the room Felicity sleeps in will arrive soon and schedules can re-stabalize.

Has anyone else had a problem with the extended light hours? Our girls are just too young to have such sleep deprevation without getting super cranky and having meltdowns.

    Mostly problems with going to bed. No one wants to sleep when it’s light out.

    • I’m relieved to know it isn’t just us. I have to admit, unless I’m super tired, I have trouble sleeping with much light and Felicity doesn’t even use a night light. I have a hard time blaming them when I’d have the same problem. This morning though, Cecilia slept until 7am! So it appears those curtains are helping. Still don’t have up the others yet. Soon though I hope.

  2. I understand your frustrations! My DS doesn’t sleep at all while there is light in his room. So for a while we hung two or three dark sheets in front of the window in his room. Finally this past month I went to a material store and found the darkes heaviest material I could find and made a simple curtain. That, with closed blinds, allows him to sleep better. THere’s still a little light but if it does anything it will just wake him up.

    • Cecilia’s have definitely helped. Glad to hear your son is sleeping better. Now just to get some in Felicity’s room.
